The Political Possibility of Sound: Fragments of Listening – Salomé Voegelin (UK/CH)
The essay is the perfect format for a crisis. Its porous and contingent nature forgives a lack of formality, while its neglect of perfection and virtuosity releases the potential for the incomplete and the unrealizable. These seven essays on The Political Possibility of Sound present a perfectly incomplete form for a discussion on the possibility of the political that includes creativity and invention, and articulates a politics that imagines transformation and the desire to embrace a connected and collaborative world.

The themes of these essays emerge from and deepen discussions started in Voegelin’s previous books, Listening to Noise and Silence and Sonic Possible Worlds. Continuing the methodological juxtaposition of phenomenology and logic and writing from close sonic encounters each represents a fragment of listening to a variety of sound works, to music, the acoustic environment and to poetry, to hear their possibilities and develop words for what appears impossible.

As fragments of writing they respond to ideas on geography and migration, bring into play formless subjectivities and trans-objective identities, and practice collectivity and a sonic cosmopolitanism through the hearing of shared volumes. They involve the unheard and the in-between to contribute to current discussions on new materialism, and perform vertical readings to reach the depth of sound.

The author will introduce and discuss her new book, and enter into a conversation with the audience on how politics understood as the governance of our living together can be imagined and realised through listening and sound.

Salomé Voegelin makes sound and writes about sound to access through words and ephemeral things the indivisible sphere of a connected world. Her most recent book The Political Possibility of Sound: Fragments of Listening, 2019, articulates a politics that includes creativity and invention and imagines transformation and collaboration as the basis of our living together. Voegelin is a Professor of Sound at the London College of Communication, UAL.

Followed by a performance by David Mollin and Salomé Voegelin with Jan Schacher about the precarious lives of hummingbirds and the sound proofing qualities of ceiling tiles to ensure privacy and the right to speak.

David Mollin and Salomé Voegelin are a Swiss-UK artist collective (Mollin+Voegelin) who collaborate on projects that focus on invisible connections, transient behaviour and unseen rituals. Their work reconsiders socio-political, architectural and aesthetic actualities through the possibilities of sounds, voices and words, whose invisible mobility invites an individual and collective inhabiting and promotes participation.

Jan Schacher is an artist-researcher and perform on stage and other environments, always working with/through sound and presence. Trained as an instrumentalist, composer and digital artists, the focus of his practice has shifted from using sounds organised as music to deploying the body as the central site of action, perception, and culture.

Voegelins sieben Essays über die politische Möglichkeit des Klangs bilden eine unvollständige Form für eine Diskussion über die Möglichkeit des Politischen und artikulieren eine Politik die sich Transformation und den Wunsch nach einer vernetzten und kollaborativen Welt imaginiert.
Die Themen der zusammengefassten Essays gehen aus den früheren Büchern Voegelins, «Listen Noise and Silence» und «Sonic Possible Worlds», hervor und vertiefen die Diskussionen auf ein Neues. Das Fortschreiten einer methodologischen Aneinanderreihung von Phänomenologie und Logik sowie das Schreiben welches aus nahen akustischen Begegnungen hervorgeht, stellt jeweils ein Fragment des Zuhörens einer Vielzahl von Sound Works, der Musik, der akustischen Umgebung und der Poesie dar, um darin Möglichkeiten zu hören und ein Vokabular zu entwickeln, welches unmöglich erscheint.
Die geschriebenen Fragmente reagieren auf geographische und migrantische Fragestellungen, bringen formlose Subjektivitäten und trans-objektive Identitäten ins Spiel und praktizieren Kollektivität und einen «sonic cosmopolitanism» im gemeinsamen Hören. Sie involvieren das Ungehörte und das Dazwischen um zu aktuellen Diskussionen über «new materialism» beizutragen und sich in performativen vertikalen Lesarten den Tiefen des Klangs anzunähern.

Die Autorin wird ihr neues Buch vorstellen und mit dem Publikum in eine Diskussion einsteigen wie «Politik als Kontrollorgan unseres Zusammenlebens» durch «Listening» und Sound gedacht werden kann.

Anschliessend folgt eine Listening-Performance von David Mollin und Salomé Voegelin in Kollaboration mit Jan Schacher über das prekäre Leben von Kolibris und die Schalldämmung von Deckenfliesen die Privatsphäre und das Recht zu sprechen gewährleisten.

Salomé Voegelin macht Geräusche und schreibt über Geräusche, um durch Worte und vergängliche Dinge auf die unteilbare Sphäre einer verbundenen Welt zuzugreifen. Ihr jüngstes Buch The Political Possibility of Sound: Fragmente des Zuhörens, 2019, artikuliert eine Politik, die Kreativität und Erfindungen einschließt und Transformation und Zusammenarbeit als Grundlage unseres Zusammenlebens vorstellt. Voegelin ist Professor für Klang am London College of Communication, UAL.
