Die OOR Saloon Feminist Sound & Listening Group entsteht aus dem Begehren nach einem konzentrierten gemeinsamen Nachdenken über feministische und dekoloniale Politiken des Hörens anhand von bestehenden Texten. Das Format möchte sich vertieft mit Texten aus queer-feministischer und dekolonialer Theorie/Sound Studies, kritischer Musikologie und essayistischem Schreiben auseinandersetzen.
Anhand der von OOR Saloon vorgeschlagenen Texte möchten wir gemeinsam reflektieren wie Machtverhältnisse in Klang und Kommunikation enthalten sind und unser Hören, Zuhören und politisches Verflochtensein prägen. Gemeinsam definieren wir, wie wir zusammen die Texte lesen möchten, entwirren unklare Begriffe, hören Soundbeispiele und aufeinander.

The OOR Saloon Feminist Sound & Listening Group emerged out of the desire for a concentrated joint reflection on feminist and decolonial politics of listening through reading. The format aims to deepen the active position of listening by using texts from queer-feminist and decolonial theory/sound studies, critical musicology and essayistic writing (and many others). On the basis of the texts proposed by OOR Saloon we would like to reflect collectively how power relations are contained and reverberate in sound and communication, and how they shape our hearing, listening and political interweaving/entanglement. Together we define how we would like to read the texts, unravel unclear terms, listen to sound examples and to each other.

Marie Thompson – Whiteness and the Ontological Turn in Sound Studies
Thompson kritisiert in ihrem Text, dass gewisse momentane Hinwendungen zur Ontologie in den Sound Studies sich ungelösten Fragen zu Kultur, Identität und sozialer Ungleichheit entziehen, in dem sie den Fokus auf eine davon lösgelöste Materialität/Affektivität der Wirklichkeit richten. In ihrem Artikel konzentriert sich Thompson, wie in diesem wiederbelebten Interesse an der Ontologie in den Sound Studies weisse, männliche Geschichtsschreibung reproduziert wird.

Wie bereits in früheren Debatten in Philosophie und Kunsttheorie (Spekulativer Realismus, Neuer Materialismus, objekt-orientierte Ontologie) bei denen sich feministische Autor_innen bemüht haben sich dem Wiederaufkommen des Entpolitisierten zu stellen, entfacht ein Konfliktfeld rund um die Dezentrierung des menschlichen sozialen Subjekts/der Abkehr vom Anthropozentrismus, dem Fokus auf das vor-, außersoziale oder nicht-soziale «Reale». «Wenn die ontologische Wende zu versuchen scheint, sich über das Soziale hinaus zu bewegen, kann aus der realistisch / neu-materialistischen Stille geschlossen werden, dass «race and racialization» zu sozial, zu diskursiv und zu «menschlich» sind, um innerhalb dieser Extra-, Non-, Postmenschlichen Paradigmen Aufmerksamkeit zu verdienen».

Marie Thompson – Whiteness and the Ontological Turn in Sound Studies
Thompson criticizes in her text that certain momentary turns to ontology in sound studies elude unresolved questions of culture, identity and social inequality by focusing on a materiality/affectivity of reality/sound detached from it. In her article, Thompson focuses on how this revived interest in ontology in Sound Studies reproduces white male historiography.

As in previous debates in philosophy and art theory around speculative realism, new materialism, object-oriented ontology in which feminist authors have endeavored to raise this reproach of the re-emergence of the depoliticized, a field of conflict is (re)starting around the decentralization of the human social subject. The departure from anthropocentrism and thus the focus on the pre-, extra-social or non-social «real» and / or «material» world, the general and the universal. «If the ontological turn appears to try and move ‘beyond’ the social, then it might be inferred from the realist/new materialist quietude that race and racialization are too social, too discursive and too ‘human’ to merit attention within these extra- non- and post- human/social paradigms.»
