«When I say vision, I don’t mean dream – A Live Mixtape about Counter Mythologies»

The live Mixtape «When I Say Vision I Don’t Mean Dream» approaches female, femme, feminized, feminist, non-binary, queer of color counter mythologies.
Visions and imaginative acts which circumvent whiteness and the white gaze as central. (Collective) acts and stories of refusal, withdrawal and privacy – diverting towards what Hortense Spillers has called the «Black intramural», the community’s internal engagements.
A shifting of the center. Gestures and acts of imagination which speak to and from, listen and respond to and from the other centers. To and from here.
No explanation is given. Codes are kept codes. Refusing translation. Keeping what is explosive, explosive. Toni Morrison says about her novel «Paradise» being banned from Texas prison libraries: «It seemed like an extraordinary compliment that «Paradise» could actually blow up into a riot in a prison. The thing I am interested in is the perception of certain kinds of novels as not just explosive in a dangerous sense, but explosive in a way that could be lethal.»

Amal and Maria are friends. They met over a shared love for music; hyperactive organizing of gatherings and events of many formats and shapes; and a deep investment in critical, ex-centric or counter cultural practices and thinking.
Since 2014 they have collaborated on events, programs and pranks, together with other friends and people who became friends. Gatherings always involve bodies and minds coming together, listening and sharing (sometimes difficult) conversation; and are very often full of laughter, dancing and joy.

«When I say Vision I don’t mean Dreams» is a comment James Baldwin made (in brackets) in his 1961 essay «The New Lost Generation.» The radio show is also presented on Friday 23 February at Berne university, at the conference «The evidence of things not seen – Queering Europe with James Baldwin».

DJ Stix/Sinethemba Twalo is an independent cultural producer based in Johannesburg South Africa. Twalo is a Humanities fellow of the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. They have presented and/ or contributed work in various platforms including the 32nd São Paulo Bienal, The 8th Jerusalem show as part of Qalandiya International- The Palestinian Biennial,and  “Digging our own Graves 101” by the Center for Historical Reenactments for the Berlin Biennale 8  Sinethemba has presented work at various places including the Zentrum Fur Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM) in Karlsruhe, the Kunst –Werke (KW Institute for Contemporary Art) in Berlin,  the ifa galeries in Berlin and Stuttgart, The Goethe on Main in Johannesburg amongst others. Sinethemba is a founding member with Gabi Ngcobo and Dineo Seshee Bopape of  NGO-NOTHING GETS ORGANISED  an independent  collaborative platform operating from Johannesburg.
In their ongoing research on sonic cultures, Sinethemba Twalo uses recorded interviews, archival recordings, soundscapes/ music  and  fictional accounts to reflect on an emergent poetics of the end and/or a poetic emergency enunciating the end of the future as we know it. "(Un)Necessary Instructions for an emotional insurgency" is the title of a series of performative gestures Sinethemba has been presenting which interrogate the affective present. The works are interested in the performative nature of language, the politics of noise, and that which has been marked by time and affect.
